world's most famous snail

Matissen näyttely Tate Modernissa on muuten ehdottomasti vierailun arvoinen.

AJ's been busy with all kinds of culture happenings: visits to museums and theatre. He'd taken a good nap at the theatre today and would not want to leave Tate Modern on Sunday, he had so much fun running head wet in the turbine hall.

Go see Matisse at Tate Modern, if in London this summer. We liked it so much that one rather big print version of the world's most famous snail is now at home with us.

happy friday from the fifties

Kyseessä on tietysti Rasvaletti-valokuvanäyttely Hakasalmen huvilassa - käykäähän katsastamassa.

It's getting rather difficult to walk and even more difficult to stand still, but so many had recommended this exhibition that I could not resist. And it was so worth it. Beautiful photographs from Helsinki in the fifties and such a fun feeling to recognize those views to your own hoods, even how different they look nowadays. Rasvaletti exhibition at Hakasalmen huvila in Helsinki - go see it.

happy friday with kate

Voi pettymysten pettymys suomalaiseen yksityiseen päiväkotitoimintaan... Ei taida olla odotettavissa taideteoksia pikku-An ekalta päiväkotiviikolta, vaan ainoastaan murheellisia raportteja hyvin huonosti organisoidusta toiminnasta.

No niin, tästä alkaa ilmeisesti "Lontoossa kaikki on niin paljon paremmin" -valitusvirteni. Ja samalla kun kaipaan pikku-An lontoolaista kerhoa, vinkkaan (kaikille teille onnekkailla jotka olette Lontoossa) valokuvanäyttelystä ihan meidän Lontoon hoodeilla, nimittäin 40 - A Kate Moss Retrospective -näyttely on avoinna 15.2. asti Imitate Modern Galleriassa. Tänne minä menisin.

Cannot express my disappointment to Finnish Private Nursery that AJ has started attending this week... No arts or crafts coming home with him this week I assume, but only reports of the poorly organized operation of the nursery.

I guess this the start for my 'everything is so much better in London' whining. And it's not only AJ's good old nursery in London that I'm missing, but also this great photo exhibition that I'd definitely attend if in London: 40 - A Kate Moss Retrospective at Imitate Modern Gallery. Open until 15th Feb.

happy friday from body language exhibition

I guess that rehearsing for the nursery's Christmas party is taking already now so much time that we did not get home any art by AJ this week.

Therefore the Friday art is from Saatchi Gallery's newest exhibition called Body Language. I got a big crush on Japanese Makiko Kudo's work in the exhibition. They remind me of Hayoa Miyazaki's movies but also for some reason about The Little Prince novel. All of these I can strongly recommend.

members only view

Sunny views from Tate Modern members' cafe's terrace from last Sunday (see, it doesn't rain all the time in London). This was the first time that the place was not so packed and I actually was able to get a table inside.

But the real reason for the visit was not only the cafe, but also Paul Klee exhibition that opened just a few weeks ago. Surprisingly small paintings, mesmerizing colour combinations and a verve to buy some water colours (for both me and AJ to use). And the exhibition is so vast, that also my friend who is not pregnant, had an aching back after the round.

happy friday from the photographers' gallery

We did not do any kind of art projects this week with AJ (one of the excuses being too sunny weather to stay inside), so this Friday's art offering is from The Photographers' Gallery here in London - or actually outside it, because it was not allowed to take pictures in the Home Truths: Motherhood, Photography & Identity exhibition.

Extremely touching (or is it just me and my pregnancy hormones?), serious and different exhibition about motherhood. One of the artists is by the way Finnish Elina Brotherus, her picture series illustrate her self during the many years of failed IVF treatments. Like so many other museums and galleries in London, also this one offers free admission and is located right next to Oxford Circus.

paper bag art

Minulla oli tänään juuri 10 minuuttia aikaa pyörähtää äkkiä Saatchi Gallerian alakerrassa ennen pikku-An parturointia viereisessä Trottersissa. Sinä aikana ehdin ihastua näihin erilaisista paperipusseista -Mäkkäristä Louis Vuittoniin- leikattuihin taideteoksiin. Vau, melkoista sorminäppäryyttä.

I had today just 10 minutes to run quickly through Saatchi Gallery's ground floor before AJ's haircut at Trotters next door. Just enough to get amazed by these different paper bags -from McDonald's to Louis Vuitton- turned into brilliant pieces of art. Wow, such sleight of hand.

hermès atelier at saatchi gallery

Let it rain cats and dogs, or what ever animals, we don't mind, since we're at Festival des Métiers exhibition at Saatchi Gallery.

In this gallery room that has been build up to remind an atelier, right in front of our eyes, craftspeople are creating silk scarves, bags, china, clothing and jewellery, and they all come with an Hermès tag and a price tag with more than a few zeros. Go wonder the skills of these artisans from this Parisian fashion house (I recommend even though it didn't rain), the exhibition will be in London until Monday.

one definition of art

Eilen silmäni nauliutuivat erään liikkeen näyteikkunaan teipattuun Twyla Tharpin ajatukseen "Taide on ainoa tapa paeta jättämättä kotia"(oma suomennusversioni). Ajattelin kyllä hetkeksi jättää tänään kodin (ja pojat) ja käväistä The Other Art Fair -taidemessuilla/-näyttelyssä. Kivaa sunnuntaita!

Yesterday my eyes caught this quote by Twyla Tharp in a store window 'Art is the only way to run away without leaving home'. I do have plans to leave home (and my boys) today for a moment and visit The Other Art Fair. Have a fab Sunday!

1/2700 probability

2 700 postikorttia, joista osa on hyvin nimekkäiden taiteilijoiden tekemiä, osa ihan vaan tavallisten taideopiskelijoiden, jotka kylläkin saattavat olla tulevaisuuden isoja nimiä. Postikortit ovat nähtävillä tällä viikolla livenä, tai niitä voi tutkia netissä (täällä), ja ne myydään lauantaina first come first served -meiningillä. Yksi kortti kustantaa 45 puntaa, ja juju on siinä, että vasta kortin lunastettuaan saa tietää, kenen taiteilema kuva tuli ostettua.

Näyttelystä voi ostaa punnalla arpalipukkeen, jolla saattaisi päästä hankkimaan teoksen 50 ensimmäisen joukossa. Me lähdemme pikku-An kanssa huomenna lunastamaan arpaa, ja toivomme voitokasta sellaista, koska ilman sitä pitäisi ilmeisesti olla valmis telttailemaan ainakin myyntiä edeltävä yö näyttelyrakennuksen edustalla. Niin suosittuja kortit ovat.

2700 postcards, of which some are made by very famous artist and some by art students, who might one day be big names. They can be viewed live in an exhibition or in web in here and are sold on Saturday on a first-come first-served basis. One card cost 45 pounds and the trick is that just after you've purchased it you get to know who has made it.

In the exhibition one can buy lottery tickets, and winning would mean one would be among 50 lucky ones who get to do postcard shopping before anyone else. We're going after a lottery ticket with AJ tomorrow, and hope for a winning one, otherwise it would be needed to tent in front of the exhibition building at least the night before the sale. You see, these are very popular postcards.

museum morning

Jo pari viikkoa sitten lähetin muuten iso-An mukana kaikki paksut talvivaatteet Helsinkiin. Onneksi pari villakaapua jäi, nimittäin Lontoossa on ollut hyytävän kylmä tällä viikolla!

Tate Modern's Lichtenstein exhibition's premier was this week. We visited the museum this morning, during the members' only hour, and avoided big rush (probably also because who else would have wanted to visit a museum on a Sunday morning before 10 o'clock). Mr A and I both liked the exhibition a lot, and got wondering those straight dot lines so much that decided to do some background studies (=google) and visit it once more.

I sent all thick winter clothing with Mr A to Helsinki already a few weeks ago. Luckily some wool cardis were left, since it's been freezing in London this week!

valentino spectacular

Valentino on todellakin Maestro!

Valentino is a true Maestro! Finally last weekend I got to see the exhibition Valentino: Master of Couture, which showcases Valentino's work and life from the past 50 years. In the main showroom there's a big cat walk, that museum visitors walk along, and on both sides of it 130 Valentino couture pieces from 1950s to the very resent years.

So stunning I cannot describe (and no photography allowed so I do not have any pictures to show either)! Like Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway's Oscar ceremony gowns, evening gown that has belonged to Audrey Hepburn, and the dress Jackie Kennedy had on when marrying Onassis.

I'd love to admire more often Valentino couture from this close, I just cannot think where the next opportunity might occur. Meanwhile one can get to know Valentino's work in virtual museum in here. And if you happen to be in London before 3rd of March, go see the exhibition! At least the weekends seem to be outsold, so I strongly advice to purchase the tickets in advance.

Besides the couture dresses there was other material, of which some small, funny details stuck into my mind. Like letters from Anna Wintour (maybe because Anna's handwriting is so big!), Meryl Street's letter where she regrets she cannot attend the fashion show, because her expected date is on the very same weekend, Christmas card from Charles, William and Harry, and Valentino sketches which are pieces of art just like that.

northern women in chanel in helsinki

Omaksi viimeiseksi Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 kokemuksekseni jää tämä Northern Women in Chanel -valokuvanäyttely galleria Laboratoryssa, osoitteessa Erottaja 9 b (sisäpihalla).

Kuvista on muuten tehty kirjakin. Sen voisi tilata täältä. (Mikä harmi, että joulu meni juuri!)

My last Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 experience will be this Northern Women in Chanel photography exhibition at gallery Laboratory, in address Erottaja 9 b (courtyard). Though the year is changing already next week, the exhibition will run until 27th of January.

In photographer duo Peter Farago and Ingela Klemetz Farago's pictures 45 supermodels from the Nordic and Baltic countries wearing Chanel. Kirsi Pyrhönen and Suvi Koponen represent Finnish beauty. I myself discovered Freja Beha Erichsen's extremely beautiful looks first time in this exhibition, though she's been very popular for a long time already. She totally mesmerized me, and I'm one of the many Freja fans in the future.

There's a book about the pictures. It could be ordered from here. (Such a shame that Christmas was just a few days ago!)

12.11.2012

urban masters

Lauantai-iltapäivän vietimme itä-Lontoossa, Shoreditchissä. Alue on ihan uber cool ja huippu gallerioiden, putiikkien, vintage-kauppojen, baarien ja katutaiteen suhteen. Factory 7:n (os. 13 Hearn Street) Urban masters -näyttelyyn oli koottu katutaiteilijoiden creme de la creme. Verbaaliset kykyni eivät riitä kuvailemaan näkemäämme, eli ehdottomasti kokemisen arvoinen näyttely, joka on avoinna vain tämän viikon.

Samana iltana telkkarimme sattui olemaan auki musiikkikanavalla juuri UK top 40 -listan ykkösen aikaan.

We spent Saturday afternoon in Shoreditch, east London. The area is uber cool and top when it comes to galleries, boutiques, vintage stores, bars and street art. Factory 7, at 13 Hearn Street, is right now holding an exhibition called Urban Masters, where creme de la creme of the the street artists are gathered together. I do not have enough verbal skills to describe what it's all about, it's definitely worth a visit and open only this week.

The same evening we had TV open on music channel right when the UK top 40 list's number one was announced. The first place belongs to (Xmas light guy) Robbie Williams, and coincidentally the music video for Candy had been shot in the same scenery where we spent the day.

And I must confess that during the top 20 review I realized I'm totally oblivious of present music scene, but oh well, the clothes and books from teenage world will do for me.

2.11.2012

fashion fairytale

We start to be such exhibition experts with AJ that when yesterday a British lady asked us if we knew where the Valentino exhibition was held, we knew that it's starting in the end of November.

I hope the lady went to see the Tim Walker photography exhibition Story Teller instead. It is like a fashion wonderland, beauties such as Scarlett Johansson and Kirsi Pyrhönen wearing magical couture posing in fairytalelike pictures, and these combined with playful props (like a grass hopper playing a violin) compose a stunning display.

Also these pictures are gathered in a book, I admired it (and quite a few others) in the bookstore next to the exhibition. Museum shops are always so interesting. Be enchanted by the pictures of Tim Walker in here.

29.10.2012

chanel's little black jacket

Näyttelyn lisäksi kuvista voi nauttia KL:n tuoreessa kirjassa The Little Black Jacket, kirjaan liittyvää materiaalia netissä täällä.

During our walk in Chelsea on Saturday we visited Saatchi Gallery. Phew, very crowded! Chanel's photographic exhibition Little Black Jacket, where 113 friends of Karl Lagerfeld from music, modeling, movie and fashion industry pose in the jacket styled by Carine Roitfeld and Karl Lagerfeld and photographed by KL himself. The exhibition will be open only until 4th of November.

My personal favourite was Sarah Jessica Parker, who glows and mesmerizes in her picture. Right next to SJP is Anna Wintour's picture. Characteristic this one too: Anna is posing her back of the head towards the camera. Even from the bob shot from behind you cannot except it to belong to anyone else but her.

All of you who will not be able to see the exhibition, the pictures can be found from KL's recent book The Little Black Jacket, material from making of the book in the web in here.

art party this weekend

Mitä? Taidetta edulliseen hintaan, eli 40-4000 puntaa, Affordable Art Fair -messuilla. Tiedä vaikka sattuisi lunastamaan itselleen jonkun tulevaisuuden Hirstin teoksen pilkkahintaan.
Missä? Lontoon Battersea Parkissa.
Milloin? Tämän viikon keskiviikosta sunnuntaihin. Vielä ehtii, meillä on liput viikonlopulle!

What? Art for affordable prices, i.e. 40-4000 pounds, at Affordable Art Fair. You never know if you manage to buy yourself a work of a future Hirst for a ridiculously low price.
Where? In London Battersea Park. And if you're not interested in investing in art, I suggest anyway a visit to the park, where you can find e.g. a zoo and a beautiful Buddhist peace pagoda.
When? From Wednesday this week until Sunday. We've got tickets for the weekend!

who else is in london

Olemme pikku-An kanssa vihdoin takaisin Lontoossa, mutta emme ainoastaan me, vaan myös Mr Brainwash on taas täällä. Nyt jos olet Englannissa, etkä ole vielä nähnyt hänen näyttelyään Old Sorting Stationilla, New Oxford Streetillä, kipikipi! Näyttely on avattu uudestaan suuren menestyksen vuoksi: 85 000 kävijää viidessä viikossa.

Olimme katsomassa näyttelyn iso-An kanssa treffi-iltanamme pari viikkoa sitten, minä kolmatta kertaa ja iso-A ekaa kertaa.

Kivaa keskiviikkoa!

We're back in London, but not only we are here again, but also Mr Brainwash is back in the city. If you're in England, and have not yet seen his exhibition at Old Sorting Station on New Oxford Street, hurry! The exhibition is reopened due to great earlier success: 85 000 visitors in five weeks.

Without saying, I have a little crush on him, or at least on his creativity and works of art. (Some say his just a copycat, but I adore his work.) We saw the exhibition with Mr A on our date night a few weeks ago, I for the third time, Mr A for the first time. Mr A got pretty excited, too, we even asked the prices of some of the works. Well, even though you're not planning on buying anything, it's worth checking out, since there are free give away posters handed out.

I got a permission to take only one poster with me this time, in Mr A's opinion our flat is already quite well Brainwashed. Have a fabulous Wednesday!

tuesday dreams

This is why London is so awesome: in a stinky gateway you can find treasures like this. Tuesday is the best day for dreaming...

13.9.2012

how was your day?

Aamulla matkalla ratikkapysäkille ihmettelimme pikku-An kanssa oksat notkollaan olevia pihlajanmarjapensaita.

On the way to the tram stop we wondered with AJ the amount of berries in rowanberry bushes. It was here I noticed I had forgotten camera home, therefore pictures are again taken with iPhone Instagram. At the hairdresser's the usual: colour and trimming. My hairdresser is moving, so last time in these surroundings.

In the evening with sister and brother at Amos Anderson museum's fashion meets art exhibition, Boutique. Second encounter in one week with Katja Tukiainen's work. Minna Parikka shoes seen on Lady Gaga were showcased in the exhibition, too. Photographed by Terry Richardson on Lady Gaga in here.

Suddenly it was time for evening bath again! That's our yesterday in a nutshell. How was your day?
